Seeing is Believing
- In 2009, Standard Chartered Americas has currently raised US$50,000 for Seeing is Believing through internal staff fundraisers and donations from clients
- Standard Chartered Peru is working to launch a project in Lima that will aim to reduce retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) as a major cause of childhood blindness in Peru and to develop Low Vision services for marginalized populations. The project has the ultimate goal of eradicating ROP as cause of blindness in Peru, and to be replicated across Latin America.
- In 2008, Standard Chartered made a commitment with the Clinton Global Initiative to invest US$20 million over the next five years to help 20 million people in less advantaged areas of 20 cities worldwide.
- In 2008, we hosted a Seeing is Believing Gala Dinner in New York City on World Sight Day to launch Phase IV of the programme - we raised over $500,000 for Seeing is Believing via silent auction.
Living with HIV
- Standard Chartered sponsored AIESEC’s International Congress, held in Brazil in August, 2008. Over 700 students and leaders in the fight against HIV/AIDS attended. Americas HIV Champions provided an HIV/AIDS training to AIESEC students on-site.
- The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene selected One Madison Avenue to be a part of their condom dispenser pilot program and has provided two dispensers for free. In accordance with our Global HIV/AIDS Policy, these dispensers were installed in the men’s and women’s restrooms, providing access to free condoms for staff
Protecting the Environment
Travel
Reducing travel greatly reduces Standard Chartered’s emissions impact on the environment. Our facilities here are equipped with updated video conferencing capabilities to ensure efficient communication with colleagues overseas. The Americas aims to reduce or travel carbon footprint by 10% in 2009.
Paper Consumption
Americas print devices have been reduced by more than 50% to decrease paper consumption. Americas fax machines have also been consolidated and decreased by over 60%.
Employee Volunteering
Helen Keller International Childsight® Program - New York/New Jersey colleagues volunteered with Helen Keller’s Childsight® to help identify children in New York City schools who may need glasses but do not have the resources or funds to get them. Standard Chartered volunteers were the first corporate volunteers to work with Childsight. In the 2008-2009 school year, our volunteers alone screened 11,741 students on-site, which resulted in providing 1,582 glasses to children in need. We will continue our volunteer partnership with Childsight for the 2009-2010 school year
Employee Volunteering (cont’d)
Recording for the Blind & Dyslexic (RFB&D) - Staff regularly volunteer at RFB&D to record audiobooks for the blind. The books are housed in the national library and is available for use by the visually impaired community
New York and New Jersey colleagues volunteer at God’s Love We Deliver, an organization that provides meals to people living with HIV/AIDS in the NYC area.
Standard Chartered has been a supporter of Citymeals on Wheels for the past 10 years. New York and New Jersey colleagues help deliver meals to Manhattan’s homebound elderly who are suffering from a chronic physical or mental disability preventing them from shopping for food or preparing meals for themselves.
Colleagues have delivered over 5,000 meals to the elderly.New York and New Jersey colleagues volunteer regularly with the Riverside Fund, an organization that aims to preserve and improve New York’s classic waterfront green space.
Colombia colleagues volunteer their time with “Fundación Niños por un Nuevo Planeta”, an organization that provides care, housing, and support for children coping with the trauma of abuse. In addition to volunteering their time, staff have also donated eyeglasses, a recreation space, and other needed supplies for the organization.
Mexico colleagues volunteered with Naturalia, an organization that focuses on rebuilding Mexico’s depleted forests and woodlands. Staff planted over 200 trees during their reforestation projects.
Brazil colleagues provide HIV/AIDS training and education sessions for students in local schools. The sesessions teach about the importance of prevention and raise awareness within the community.
Venezuela has been a long-time supporter of Fundana, an orphanage that provides care and housing for local children. In addition to volunteering, the team continues to donate basic necessities like diapers, food packages, and other home goods on a regular basis to support Fundana’s daily operations .
Argentina colleagues led the way on World Environment Day by hosting eco-friendly staff competitions and developing environment safe bags for staff and clients.
Peru colleagues volunteer with a local non-profit in Lima that provides sight restorations and care for babies suffering from early on-set blindness. Fortunately, because of donations, the eyesight of many babies has been saved.
Standard Chartered Private Bank in Miami volunteers annually on “White Cane Safety Day.” The event, a national observance designed to recognize the white cane as a tool and symbol of the blind, also helps to educate the public regarding the White Cane Law
